Portola Valley, California – Cooks, housekeepers, dishwashers, maintenance workers, gardeners and other employees at The Sequoias Retirement Community will lead a candlelight vigil tomorrow to urge their employer to bargain in good faith toward a fair union contract.
Workers at The Sequoias haven’t received a contractual wage increase in over two and a half years. Meanwhile, over the last four years, the executives that run The Sequoias have increased their own salaries by as much as 100%, earning up to $459,000 per year.
Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services, the company that owns The Sequoias, has refused to agree to three percent annual raises and no changes to the cost of healthcare coverage for 70 employees, at a combined yearly cost to the company of just $60,000 – a fraction of the individual salaries of the company’s top executives.
